Tsunami Recovery

On 26 December 2004, an earthquake centred off Indonesia created a deadly tsunami that killed more than 250,000 people. The tsunami had enough energy to travel across the Indian Ocean and also cause significant damage along the coast of Somalia. Somalia has the longest coastline in Africa, with some 3,330 kilometres of sea front.

SAACID assessed settlements north of Mogadishu for 200 kilometres - within its current area of operations. It found that 2 population clusters (Adale and Warsheikh) were worthy of support. SAACID put out a call to donors and the Mennonite Central Committee in America decided that the need of these 2 communities was worthy of attention.
