SAACID - Anti-FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) Programming
SAACID has been conducting anti-FGM initiatives since its inception in 1990. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) pervades Somali society with an estimated 98.5% of the Somali female population undergoing some sort of genital mutilation.

In Somalia, four types of FGM are carried out:

  1. 'Pharonic' - which is the complete excision of all genitalia and the complete infibulation (sewing of the wound) of the wound - which is sown up to leave a space the size of a grain of rice for urine and menstrual bleeding.
  2. 'Pharonic' - which is the excision of the labia minoris and the entire clitoris with full infibulation.
  3. 'Sunna' - which is the removal of the labia minoris, partial removal of the clitoris with partial infibulation.
  4. 'Sunna' - which is a pin prick to the clitoris to conform to some interpretations of Islamic teaching.
SAACID has been able to secure some anti-FGM funding over the years, but it has not been a donor priority, and access to funding for anti-FGM activities has remained meagre in the Somali context.

On its own, SAACID incorporates anti-FGM messaging in its secondary and vocational schools; in its women's teacher's training institute; in its micro-credit entrepreneurship course; and in other ad hoc programming that SAACID is able to secure.
